To amend your federal tax return, you need to file Form 1040-X for that you need to Provide Correct Information and Attach Supporting Documents.

You generally have three years from the original filing date to file an amended return. For example, for a 2020 tax return filed in 2021, you have until April 15, 2024, to amend it. If you are due a refund from the amendment, you must file the amended return within the 3-year period.

Amended returns can take 8 to 12 weeks or longer to process, depending on the complexity and volume of returns the IRS is handling.
